Field Experience

The artifacts I chose to highlight my field experience align with more than one of VSCU’s Core Values.  They are: Effective Use of Instructional Technology and Expertise in Curriculum Instruction and Expertise in Assessment. The artifacts are from EDUC 650, Field Design and Implementation, and they encompass curriculum design, reflection, technology and growth.  I explored new approaches to planning, managing and assessing in this unit.  Students learned how to collaborate and incorporate technology while solving a real-world problem.  These artifacts highlight my efforts in planning, managing and delivering assessment in the foreign language classroom.  I incorporated technology in this problem-based unit, which involved critical thinking skills that encouraged students to solve a problem they would encounter in real-world setting.

The Field Experience artifacts I chose align with VCSU’s Core Values which exemplify good teaching in connection with the National Board of Profession Teaching Standards proposition 2: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to student and Proposition 4: Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. This field experience shows that I am committed to students and their learning.  I know the subject I teach and how to teach this subject to students.  I am responsible for managing and monitoring student learning, I think systematically about my practice and I learn from experience as seen in my reflection of the unit.

This field experience highlights my complete understanding of curriculum and instruction. In addition, it demonstrates my ability to include methods and strategies for applying technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.  This artifact also showcases my knowledge and skills necessary for effective use of current instructional technologies in order to enhance learning.  My knowledge of technology contributes to positive school change that supports a learner-centered environment.

I will be able to use the knowledge gained in this course to provide an excellent reference tool for both students and colleagues, as it includes real-world problem solving, and incorporates technology such as online webpages and student journaling.

This course afforded me the opportunity to appreciate my knowledge in foreign language, and how it is linked to real-world settings.

I was able to draw on this field experience to critically examine my practice, expand my repertoire, deepen my knowledge and sharpen my judgment in order to adapt my teaching to new findings, ideas and theories.

As a result of this field experience, I have learned how to challenge my students to construct their own learning. At the same time, I have learned how to reflect on my instruction. I will continue to reflect upon and modify my teaching as a result of this course.

Without a doubt, I have learned what it means to be a master teacher at Valley City State University in addressing the NBCT Standards and the VCSU Core Values.  This university has afforded me the expertise from master teachers to guide me in my pursuit of excellence.
