Navigate 1.2.1- Describe Roles and Functions in Online Learning Environments

Students’ information such as grades, records and payments for courses are managed in the SIS which is a part of the LMS.  The virtual school or an institution’s online course itself is managed by the LMS which includes administrators, content developers, teachers, students, facilitators and parents or guardians. .  These content developers will either develop the course content or they may decide to purchase content which is developed outside of the LMS.  Students, facilitators, teachers and administration all have unique roles.

Students- Students create an account and register for classes that are located in the school’s course catalog.  They register and make a payment in the SIS.  Upon completion of the course, they will be able to view their final grades.  In the LMS, students will access and submit their assignments and collaborate with their classmates.  They can participate in discussion blogs or any other tools that the teachers incorporate into the course such as wikis, blogs, chat rooms.

Facilitators- Facilitators support the students by approving courses, payments and checking the final grade.  In additional the facilitator provides technical assistance and guidance and collaborates with teachers and administrators in order to provide student support.

Teachers-Teachers post the assignments, assess student work, provide feedback, instruct, provide resources to the students, and provide initial contact information to students and parents.

Administrators- Administrators establish the policies and guidelines for teachers, students and parents.  They also coordinate the implementation of the online programs and mediate any conflicts that might arise between student, teachers and parents. Administrators monitor the online instructors to ensure consistency in the delivery of the content for all stakeholders.

Course Developers- The developers create the courses according to the school system’s state standards.

Parents- Parents serve as a monitor and an advocate for their students.  The parents can encourage their students to be organized and provide a healthy study environment.  The parent can provide support and motivation.
