Participate 1.1.2- Joining a Digital Learning Community

  1. The OpenCourseWare Consortium is a worldwide community of hundreds of higher education institutions and associated organizations committed to advancing open education and its impact on global education.  The application process in not easy and requires affiliation with an institution or company along with a donation to support their consortium. As a foreign language teacher, I was quite impressed with the number of choices for different language courses.
  2. Khan Academy- All of the site's resources are available to anyone. It doesn't matter if you are a student or a teacher.  Anyone can take a course and Khan Academy's materials and resources are available completely free of charge. The main concentration for these courses is science and math.  I like the video on the home page and as someone who is afraid of math, I actually feel that I would be comfortable learning math using Khan Academy.  I would have definitely used this when my children were in school because I was not able to tutor them.
  3. https://www.cosmolearning.com/-

Cosmo learning offers courses in every subject and was created as a free online school and is an educational website committed to improving the quality of  homeschooling, teaching and student success.  It was mainly designed for educators and motivated self-learners.  It is organized according to traditional educational standards and provides courses, instructional videos, books and a variety of multimed

4 .  https://ftacademy.org/The Free Technology Academy offers a full educational program on Free Software and Open Standards. Since courses are created on demand, they ask that you send an email to express your interests.  Anything you want to learn about technology can be found here!

5. https://www.coursera.org

After exploring these DLCs, I found one in particular that offers the largest variety of courses.  I joined Coursera and actually registered to take a couple of courses: Foundations of Virtual Instruction and Emerging Trends & Technologies in the Virtual K-12 Classroom. There are over 400 courses offered that are created by educators from top educational institutions.  I was extremely impressed with this email upon enrollment in a course as they included this survey:

Dear Vicki Campos,

Thank you for signing up for Foundations of Virtual Instruction! We are very excited to have you as part of this course and this exciting new opportunity for professional development. Please note that the deadline to complete Quiz 1 & 2 is Sunday, October 13th at 11:55 pm (UTC).

In order to provide a course that best suits your needs, we would be grateful if you would complete a brief optional survey, linked here:

We'll notify you again when the class starts. We're looking forward to our journey together!

Best wishes,

The Coursera platform is designed on proven teaching methods.

Online learning plays a significant role in a lifelong education. I am happy to see this: In fact, a recent report by the U.S. Department of Education found that online learning produces stronger student learning outcomes rather than strictly face to face instruction.

Finally, what I liked most about this site is they use peer assessments, where students can evaluate and provide feedback on each other’s work.  Since I recently completed an online Master’s degree in teaching and technology, I personally feel that this technique resulted in accurate feedback for me and was a valuable learning experience me as a grader.
