1.       What is the most proactive means of ensuring the most balanced blend of technology and well-being?

I have already learned from my experience of getting an online Master’s degree in Instructional Technology that I have to balance my time online.  Working on a Master’s degree is quite a rigorous task and when it is entirely online there are many ways to be proactive to ensure a balance of technology and well-being.  I used to sit on the couch with my laptop in my lap and work for hours on assignments without taking a break.  Now I commit to spending no more than 2 hours at a time on any assignment and I incorporate breaks every hour.  It is so easy to lose focus on your surroundings which include family and other duties.  Before I learned to take breaks and limit my time online, I would literally spend all day doing assignments with as little as one or maybe two breaks all day!  Last fall, I began an exercise regimen which included resistance training and cardio.  I lost 35 pounds and my energy level and overall health improved dramatically.  I purchased a mouse for my laptop and I no longer sit hunched over my laptop on the sofa at night.  I found that I can’t sleep well if I work later than 9 or 10:00 at night.  Most days, I try not to work past 9pm but I really prefer to turn off my computer by 7 and maybe check emails once before going to bed.  My next step is to purchase an ergonomic stand for my laptop.  At the office, I now use a wrist pad for my keyboard and my mouse.  Is makes it much more comfortable when typing and clicking the mouse.

2.       What can students and teachers do to make sure they get the most from technology while simultaneously safeguarding good health?

Both students and teachers need to be aware of the problems that can occur as a result of not taking precautions safeguarding good health.  Some of these problems associated with digital overuse are:

1.      Eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, focusing problems, light sensitivity, double vision.  Teachers and students should make sure to have proper lighting and take periodic breaks.

2.      Daily computer use of more than two or three hours results in neck and shoulder pain. Teachers should tell students to stretch and walk around once per hour.

3.      Sleep problems: with overuse of the internet or any activity online, this can definitely hinder sleep patterns.  Teachers should recommend that students stop all computer activity at least 3 hours before they go to bed.

4.      Weight gain: Sitting for long periods of time in front of the computer either online or playing games will cause weight gain if not balanced with a good diet and exercise.

Good health is all about balance.  It is essential to understand that too much of anything is not good and balancing exercise with computer use as well as eating a balanced diet are necessary to safeguard good health.  Technology has its merit, but too much of it can wreak havoc on our lives.  Yes, it can be tempting to be online for extended periods of time, but it is important to find that balance between online and offline activities.
